Michael J. Weiss, MPH, has been selected by Lehigh Valley Business as one of this year’s winners in the “Forty Under 40” awards program, which celebrates 40 of the Greater Lehigh Valley’s most accomplished young businessmen and women. Weiss is one of the uniquely talented professionals working at Populytics, Inc., wholly owned data analytics subsidiary of Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). His education, background, and expertise position him as the company expert in health economics and outcomes research design.
As Senior Health Economist at Populytics since 2016, Weiss performs what is termed full lifecycle analytics. It requires him to design and develop ways to subjectively and objectively evaluate data and determine how to best report it. In order to interpret and clearly explain his analyses, he must stay up-to-date with a dynamic health care industry. Nationally, laws and regulations that affect reimbursements are in a process of change. Known as “alternative payment models,” the changes affect revenue and require redesigning methods of delivering health care. Weiss must take this into consideration as he provides interpretation and reporting on the regional payer, provider, and patient levels.
Weiss is a highly valued expert, both within Populytics and throughout the Lehigh Valley Health Network enterprise due to his specific expertise in the areas of emerging payer-provider relationships and the financial impact of analytic information. He identifies, directs, merges, and delivers results from colleagues across operational lines and in pursuit of a common goal.
A frequent speaker, Weiss has presented at numerous conventions, published multiple peer reviewed articles, and works to ensure that the community benefits from health care in ways others might not have considered. His history over the past decade includes participation and/or seats held on numerous health-based boards, leadership groups, care cost panels, the Young Professionals Council, as well as various committees and task forces representing strategy, finance, research, education, analytics, process improvement, revenue optimization, and clinical integration.
Previously, Weiss held positions with LVHN including Manager, Analytics, Lehigh Valley Health Network Accountable Care Organization (2015-2016), where he led a team that produced and interpreted reports from claims and other data sources to identify opportunities for Medicare patients. He also served as Population Health Scientist in Health Systems Research & Innovation (2013-2015), and was a Biostatistician in the Network Office of Research & Innovation (2011-2013). The latter involved facilitating research endeavors for all attending LVHN physicians, supporting data analytics for protocol development, biostatistics, manuscript development, and institutional review board submissions.
Weiss holds a Bachelor of Science in biology with a chemistry minor from Wagner College, Staten Island, NY, and a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Public Health. He served as an adjunct professor in a doctorate program in applied epidemiology and biostatistics at DeSales University, Center Valley, Pa., and has held various advisory roles in mentorship initiatives under Lehigh Valley Health Network and other educational institutions.
