The Hotter it is, the More Water you Need

The hot summer days are here and it is imperative to be aware of how much water we are consuming to avoid dehydration. While recommendations for plain water vary by individual, the National Acadamies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Mayo Clinic recommend the following daily water intake from a variety of beverages, fruits, and vegetables:

  • About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men
  • About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women

If you are experiencing any of the following, it’s time to reach for a cold glass of water. In fact, feeling thirsty means dehydration has already started.

  • Extreme thirst
  • Less frequent urination
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

How to Ensure You’re Getting Enough

These tips from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention can help you add more water to your day:

  • Carry a water bottle with you at work or when going out
  • Put bottles of freezer-safe water in the freezer, so you have water to go
  • Choose water instead of sugary drinks to save calories while hydrating
  • Choose water when eating out – you’ll save money while being healthier
  • Add fruit to your water so you’ll drink more than you normally do
